I have yet again finished reading 2 of my favourite series of books in yet again record time! The first series is by Maria V. Snyder has the books Poison Study, Magic Study and Fire Study, I really love them, they never seem to grow old. Has anyone else read this series?? If you havent read them I will give you the basic synopsis of the first book.
Poison Study is about Yelena, a young woman who is about to be sent to the hangman for killing a man when she is given the choice of the noose, or becoming the newest poison taster for the leader of Ixia, the Commander. Choosing the latter option (she would have to or else it would be a really short book!) she starts to learn the poisons assassins could use under the direction of the "head of intelligence" Valek, the man responsible for getting the Commander into power by killing the old monarchy. In a land where magic is forbidden and Sitian magicians are not trusted, Yelena's run in with Irys, Fourth Magician of Sitia, proves to add a bit more difficulty to her position in discovering that her mysterious survival instinct is actually magic that desperately needs to be trained before it becomes dangerous to everyone. But before she can get the training she needs, she must escape from her current position, which means finding the cure to the reason that no poison taster has ever run away whilst roaming the castle, Butterfly's Dust, the cure to which is known by no one, except Valek...
This is an amazing book and Maria V. Snyder is currently writing a second series of books starting with Storm Glass based on a character whom you meet in Magic Study and Fire Study, which I have also read. Over all I would give this series a massive recommendation to all you out there who want to get away from your normal world with something a bit magical, and just to warn you its not Harry Potter style magic! I would definately say that this book is aimed for more mid teens to mid twenties than youngertwenteen!!! children but it is still a very good read to all you people who are older but still wish to be
I would love to speak to anyone who has read these books and get their opinions of Maria as a writer. Also if you want to please recommend books for me to read! A person can never have to many books to be honest and I am always on the look out for a new good read!
Next time I am going to be doing a quick review on Jeaniene Frost, author of my other favourite series begining with Halfway to the Grave and please leave a comment on how good/ helpful you think this post is because I think I would like to do more in the future.
Chat to you soon!
